President Wavel Ramkalawan chaired a meeting with Retailers at the International Conference Centre Seychelles (ICCS) this morning. This first meeting with all retailers was to further discuss the economic realities of the country, to share the numerous challenges affecting retailers in Seychelles, and how together; the government and the retailers can work in partnership to find possible solutions moving forward.
President Ramkalawan opened the discussions by noting the importance of constant consultations and collaboration as a way to also improve the present situation in the country in commerce such as the lack of commodities, the cost of living as well as subsidised goods and other pertinent matters.
During the meeting, the retailers had the opportunity to put forward the difficulties they are facing such as; the review of import permit procedure and how to make it more efficient, regularizing items that have value-added tax and tax, setting parameters for wholesalers and retailers, point of sale, Gainful Occupation Permit (GOP) procedures, employment procedures and a moratorium on the retail license (taking into account proximity, density, and other criteria).
The retailers also made constructive contributions they felt would not only make a difference in the lives of their customers but for the country in general. They underlined the importance for the population to learn to plan their budget wisely, especially now during this difficult moment.
The President also availed of the opportunity to express his gratitude towards the retailers for their contributions at district level where they gave a helping hand during various incidents or sports activities.
At the end of the meeting, President Ramkalawan said that he was satisfied with the outcome and that now he is in a better position to address issues put to his attention.
“The meeting today has given me a better insight into what is happening and pertinent issues that need to be rectified in order to improve the ease of doing business in the country. I want to once again put emphasis on the importance for the government and the retailers to have a win-win partnership. Not only that but the partnership between the Seychelles Trading Company and the retailers so to helps lower the cost of living”
“Nevertheless, I wish that the population in general plan and take into account what is important in their life and for their budget," said the President.
All points taken at the meeting are due for further discussions and action taken where necessary.
Also present at the meeting was the Vice President Ahmed Afif, Minister for Finance, Economic Planning and Trade, Mr. Naadir Hassan, Minister for Investment, Entrepreneurship and Industry, Mrs. Devika Vidot, and the Chairperson of the Seychelles Trading Company Board, Mr. Imtiaz Umarji.
