President Wavel Ramkalawan welcomed one of Seychelles’ pioneers of the Music Industry, Mr Despilly William at State House yesterday morning. Mr William is being honoured as the first Seychellois recording artist on Radio Sesel in 1966 and for his extensive contribution to the Seychelles music industry.

President Ramkalawan, in the presence of the Mayor of Victoria also responsible for the Department of Culture, Mr David Andre and the Honorary Cultural Ambassador, Mr Patrick Victor presented Mr William with a symbolic token of recognition.

“I am honoured to welcome you to State House today in recognition of your contribution in the music industry of Seychelles. Your songs and unique performances have not only entertained us but have also lifted our hearts over the years. So today on behalf of the people of Seychelles we say thank you for sharing your music with us” said President Ramkalawan.

At 77 years of age, Mr William says besides being received today at State House for on his birthday he is also immensely proud that his years of dedication to his music is being recognized.

The meeting was an opportunity for Mr William to share with the Head of State fond memories and highpoints of his career as a singer and musician as well as discuss the current cultural landscape in Seychelles and the critical need of reviving and preserving the traditional music.

Mr William was accompanied to State House by his daughter Sandra Williams and his grandchildren.

Also present was Ms Barbara Eugenie, the Director for PR, Marketing & Communications from the Department of Culture.
