President Wavel Ramkalawan received Mr Paul D’offay at State House this afternoon following his accomplishment to paddle from Mahé to Praslin in his Kayak in 10 hours.
The President congratulated him on such remarkable achievement at the age of sixty nine and how this could serve as a role model to inspire others and the young people to take up sports and stay healthy.
“I am very impressed by your achievement, especially for your age. It is important to give recognition to role models such as yourself in the society. Moreover, I wish to commend you for the advice you gave to our youths, especially those on drugs. A strong advice for them to stop using drugs and to take you as an example and what you have been able to attain at your age,” said President Ramkalawan.
During their meeting, the drugs afflicting the country especially among the young people was one of the pertinent issues discussed between the Head of State and Mr D’offay. The discussion was also an opportunity for him to share with the President on his preparation prior to challenging himself to paddle from Mahé to Praslin.
In an interview with the local press after his meeting with the President, Mr D’offay said that he prepared for three weeks before taking the challenge. He stated that it has always been one of his dreams; to paddle such a long distance on a kayak and with determination he has been able to reach Grand Anse Praslin. Mr D’offay further expressed his wish to give his support to the youths in any way possible to take them out of the different social ills especially those on drugs and to take canoeing as a sport.
Mr Paul D’offay hopes to challenge himself once more when he reach 79 years old.
