Mr Seegobin Nunkoo has been sworn into office as a Judge of the Supreme Court, in a ceremony at State House this morning.

He took the Oaths of Allegiance and the Judicial Oath before the President of the Republic, Mr. James Michel, and in the presence of the Vice-President, Danny Faure, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Dr Patrick Herminie, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Mrs Mathilda Twomey, Judges, the Attorney General, Ronny Govinden, Judges and Justices of the Supreme Court, a Member of the Constitutional Appointments Authority, Marie-Ange Hoareau, the spouse of Justice Nunkoo, as well as senior officials in the Office of the President.

The President expressed his congratulations to Judge Nunkoo after he had taken his oaths and noted that with his expertise  he will have an important contribution to the Supreme Court.

Judge Nunkoo is a Mauritian national with a broad legal experience in criminal and civil matters in relation to convicted drug dealers.

In 1971 he pursued a career in teaching and in 1992 he took up law studies and obtained a law degree from the University of London. He was called to the Bar in Mauritius in 1995.

Most recently, Mr. Nunkoo was serving as Commissioner in the Prime Minister's Office where he was responsible for inquiring into the assets of convicted drug dealers. Prior to that, he occupied various managerial and advisory roles in the Government of Mauritius.

In his remarks to the press, Judge Nunkoo thanked the President and the Constitutional Appointments Authority for their confidence in him.
