November 27,2012--President James Michel visited several areas of the Plaisance district today, as part of his ongoing programme of visits in communities.

The President was accompanied by the Minister for Community Development, Social Affairs and Sports, Mr. Vincent Meriton, Member of the National Assembly for Plaisance, Honourable Roma Aglae, the Principal Secretary for Community Development and Sports Department, Mr. Denis Rose, Acting Chief Executive Officer for Seychelles Land Transport Agency, Mr. Parinda Herath, District Administrator, Ms. Claudette Louise and Director General Presidential Affairs, Mrs. Doreen Arnephy.

The President held discussions with the district’s representatives about the needs, progress and development of the Plaisance communities.  It was an opportunity for them to put at the attention of the President pertinent issues concerning  infrastructure and housing projects, getting youths to participate more actively at district level and the impact of social ills.

The meeting was followed by visits to the homes of several families as well as a visit to the Home of the Elderly. The President took a few moments to interact with the residents at the Home of the Elderly. The residents asked for a fence to be placed around the Home as it has been targeted by thieves and intruders. The residents were happy to speak to the President at length, and showed their appreciation.

“The Elderly people have contributed immensely towards development, in making Seychelles what it is today, so it is important to show them that we have not forgotten them and that the government will always be there to make sure that live in comfort,” said President Michel.

President Michel and his delegation concluded their visit at the Mona Road, a project that has just been completed. The road was built by Seychelles Land Transport Agency and it will benefit over twenty residents of this community.

President Michel highlighted the importance for all in the leadership roles to remain in contact with the community, as this is a key point for progress, which he said will get the people to participate and engage in the development of the ‘New Seychelles’. He urged the District Authorities to take ownership of their respective districts if they want to better develop it and to resolve issues that exist in the community at district level. He noted that government will provide the resources required but they should be able to take the first steps in working to improve their district.
