President Danny Faure chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday 6th March, at which a number of legal and policy memoranda were considered.
Cabinet approved the Code of Corporate Governance for Public Enterprises. The Code which has been developed by the Public Enterprise Monitoring Commission will be officially launched on 1st April 2019. The Code sets high standards of corporate governance for public enterprises with the aim of ensuring positive contribution to the Government’s overall economic efficiency, competitiveness and social cohesion.
Cabinet also approved three key projects for implementation by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (NISTI). The projects which include the setting up of a National Research Foundation, the introduction of the National Knowledge Management Engagement Platform and the establishment of the Blue Economy Regional Incubator will ensure a more coordinated approach to the management of the country’s research agenda, research findings and access to data.
Cabinet approved amendments to the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2019 to increase the minimum age to ride a motorcycle or scooter to 18 years of age. Cabinet also approved the Road Transport (Electric Bicycle Specification) regulations, 2019 for electric bicycles on La Digue to have a motor capacity of below 300 watts.
