The President of the Republic of Seychelles, President Danny Faure, received the Executive Director of the African Development Bank (ADB) Dr Nyamajeje Calleb Weggoro at State House this morning. Dr Weggoro is on an official consultative mission here in Seychelles.
President Faure thanked Dr Weggoro for coming to Seychelles and for all the support ADB has given to Seychelles. He commended Dr Weggoro for the fundamental role that he is doing to further the relationship between Seychelles and the African Development Bank.
He highlighted that despite being ranked as one of the high-income countries in the African region, Seychelles still faces challenges.
Dr Weggoro briefed the President on the fruitful meetings he has had so far with the Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles, Minister of Finance, Trade & Economic Planning as well as the Governor of Central Bank. He further expressed the bank’s interest to support Seychelles on specifics projects in various sectors, such as the blue economy, fisheries, tourism, energy, capacity building among others.
During their discussions, the President also shared with Dr Weggoro on his vision for major infrastructures development and unlock the economic growth for Seychelles as well as how the ADB can assist especially in providing facilities to the private sectors.
He further commended the President for the tremendous progress Seychelles has made since his last visit in December 2016 and for the stability of Seychelles economy.
In an interview with the local press, Dr Weggoro confirmed that their commitment stands even now that Seychelles has been graduated to High-Income Country Status.
“Under the bank’s support, there is a facility for middle-income countries. However, Seychelles qualifies under this facility, so project proposals from Seychelles will be considered under that benchmark,” said Dr Weggoro.
Dr Weggoro Nyamajeje Calleb was accompanied on the courtesy call at State House by ADB Senior Advisor, Mr Amos Cheptoo and ADB Country Economist, Mr Tilahun Temesgen. Also present for the meeting was the Minister for Finance, Trade & Economic Planning, Dr Peter Larose and Principal Secretary for Economic Planning, Mrs Elizabeth Agathine.
