Judge Ellen Carolus was sworn-in as Judge of the Supreme Court yesterday, in the presence of President Danny Faure during a swearing-in Ceremony held at State House.

The President appointed Judge Carolus following recommendations made by the Constitutional Appointments Authority and following consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.

During the ceremony, Judge Carolus took two oaths; the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution and the Judicial Oath.

Miss Ellen Carolus has a Bachelor of Law from the University of Mauritius and sat for her Bar Examination at the Council of Legal Education in Mauritius. She also attended the Commonwealth Legislative Drafting Course for African Member States at the Ghana School of Law. Her career path started in 1992 as a trainee prosecutor after which she was appointed as a Public Prosecutor following on the job training. She was appointed State Counsel in 2003 and then promoted to Principal State Counsel. In 2010, Miss Carolus moved to the Fair Trading Commission as Director for Legal Affairs, before moving into the private sector. She was appointed Master of the Supreme Court in the Seychelles Judiciary in October 2015, a post she held until her appointment as Judge of the Supreme Court today.

Also present for the swearing-in ceremony was the Vice President, Mr Vincent Meriton, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Nicholas Prea, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Francis MacGregor, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mathilda Twomey, the Designated Minister, Mrs Macsuzy Mondon, Judges, Secretaries of State, Members of the Constitutional Appointments Authority, relatives and colleagues of Justice Carolus and other distinguished guests.
